Funeral services will be 10:30am, Saturday, October 6, 2012, at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in St. James with Rev. Martin Lopahs officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be Friday at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James from 5pm until 8pm and at the church one hour before services on Saturday. Bernice was born May 11, 1929 to Alfred and Marie (Niemeier) Engel. She grew up on the family farm in South Branch Township. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, So. Branch and attended the church's school through 8th grade. Following her graduation from St. James High School in 1947 she worked in the Watonwan Co. School Superintendent's office. On Christmas Day 1949 she married Warren Quick at St. John's, So. Branch. The following spring they moved to a farm in Rosendale Township. Here they raised their three children: Wendy, Kathryn and Bruce. Bernice helped Warren on the farm, gardened, sewed and raised chickens, ducks and geese. Following her marriage Bernice joined St. Paul's, St. James where she was an Evening Guild member and taught Sunday School for many years. From 1980-86 she and Warren served St. Paul's as church custodians. Following Warren's death in 1986 she began working part-time at Hardee's where she remaining employed until the business closed. In 1992 Bernice moved into St. James. Bernice, most often with her sister Evelyn, enjoyed traveling, playing cards, going to coffee at the Hometown, and most importantly spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren's activities. In 2007 the first signs of dementia appeared. In March of 2010 she moved into assisted living where she remained until Aug. of this year when she was admitted to Sogge Good Samaritan Windom. It was here that she died Oct. 2, 2012. Bernice is survived by her children; Wendy (Richard) Meyer of Mt. Lake, Kathy (Skip) Benz of Sioux Falls, SD, Bruce Quick of New Prague, sisters; Evelyn Lupke of St. James, Harriet Jean (Tom) Wright of Tacoma, WA, brother; Myron (Sally) Engel of St. James, grandchildren; Dana (Ryan) Hanson, Blair (Dan) Voigt, Zachary Benz, Christopher Benz, and Nicholas (Klarissa) Benz.
