Bernard Eischen

May 27, 1916 — September 13, 2008

There will be a Parish Prayer Service on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home. Bernard Nicholas Eischen was born May 27, 1916, in Comfrey, MN, the son of Michael John and Margaret (Schons) Eischen. He attended St. Paul's Parochial School in Comfrey and later farmed and fed cattle with his brother Alvin. Bernard was united in marriage to Lucille Kerkhoff on April 4, 1951, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan. The couple farmed west of Comfrey and Bernard moved to St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield in September of 2006. After Bernard's brother died, he continued to farm with Henry Birkemeyer at his side. In 2005, grandson Nicholas began farming. Lucille was Bernard's eyes after he lost his sight. He loved his wife and family and enjoyed every minute with them. The radio and telephone were a huge part of Bernard's life and buying, feeding, and selling cattle was his passion. He enjoyed fishing - summer and winter, hunting, and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Bernard was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Paul's Society, the Knights of Columbus, the Cattlemen's Association, and was a former church trustee. His wisdom was far greater than school education and his faith was unbreakable. Bernard Nicholas Eischen died Saturday, September 13, 2008, at St. John Lutheran Home at the age of 92 years. He is survived by wife Lucille; daughter- Gail and husband Craig Rients of Lakefield; grandsons- Jesse Rients of Shakopee, Nicholas (Rachelle) Rients and their son Dominick of Comfrey, Anthony Rients of Lakefield, and Patrick Rients of Lakefield; brother- Wilbert 'Billy' and wife Evelyn Eischen of Comfrey; sister- Elizabeth 'Betty' and husband Roman Zwaschka of Comfrey; sister-in-law- Lorrie Eischen of Comfrey; and many nieces and nephews.
