Berdine Rose Neeb

d. August 18, 2018

Berdine Schotzko was born in Redwood Falls, MN to Leo and Marie Schotzko, and grew up in the Sleepy Eye/Sanborn/Springfield area with her 9 siblings. She received her nursing degree from the College of St. Teresa in Winona and had a 37-year nursing career where she was a department head nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, taught nursing at St Barnabas School of Nursing in Minneapolis, and then finished the last 18 years at Springfield Community Hospital. She married Henry Neeb in 1963 and they farmed near Sanborn and raised 3 children. They lived on the farm for 45 years until Henry's death in 2008. She then lived at Valley View Manor in Lamberton. Taking care of people as a nurse, participating at church and club activities, and volunteering at St. John's Home were among her greatest joys. She also loved to read, disappearing for hours into books, and was endlessly creative with needlework, painting, calligraphy, and especially growing, canning, and arranging flowers from her own large gardens on the farm, and was an avid bird and wildlife watcher and feeder. After retirement, she and Bud enjoyed travel. She was an enthusiastic dancer even if she didn't know the latest steps, and a champion watermelon seed spitter. Unfailingly kind and generous, Berdine loved people and was eager to hear their stories and help them out. Not a stranger to hard work and discipline, she was also in touch with the realities of life, instinctively instilling that although life isn't always fair, we must make the best of what we are given and bloom where we are planted. She is survived by children- Jim and wife Julie Neeb, Patty and husband Brad Nielsen, and Karen Neeb and husband Ben Bockenhauer; grandchildren- Megan, Patrick, Emily, Pete, Sam, Paige, Hannah, and Jack; sisters- Mary Lee (Jim) Marshall, Sr. Clara Marie Schotzko, and Clara Mae 'Mazie' (Marvin) Van Den Broek; brothers- Ed (Mary Lee) Schotzko, Steve (Judy) Schotzko, Dr. Charles (Nancy) Schotzko, Fr. Phil Schotzko, and Dennis (Pat) Schotzko; and sister-in-law Deanna Schotzko. She was preceded in death by her parents- Leo and Marie (Wolf) Schotzko; husband Henry Neeb; and brother Jerry Schotzko.
