Benjamin Louis Tomschin was born October 18, 1917, in Bashaw Township, Brown County, the son of Walter and Minnie (Elsing) Tomschin. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed as an adult at Salem Lutheran Church in Comfrey. Ben attended country school #52 and later worked as a hired hand for many of the neighbors in the area. On September 17, 1943, he was united in marriage to Neva Horkey at First Lutheran Church in Dundee, MN. Following marriage they farmed in Bashaw Township until moving into Springfield in June of 2004. Ben was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church (formerly Salem Lutheran Church) of Comfrey his entire adult life. He enjoyed his church, farming, fishing, bowling, dancing, playing cards, watching the Twins, and visiting with family and friends. Benjamin Louis Tomschin died Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 87 years. Survivors include wife- Neva of Springfield; children- Roger and wife Sherry Tomschin of Blacksburg, VA, Duane and wife Barb Tomschin of Springfield, Janis and husband Brian Suess of North Pole, AK, and Kevin and wife Janice Tomschin of Springfield; 5 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brothers- Walter and Clarence Tomschin of Springfield, John and wife Mildred Tomschin of Minneapolis, and Louie and wife Phyllis Tomschin of Alden, MN; sisters- Minnie and husband Ralph Holmberg of Minneapolis, Viola and husband Merlin Miller of Maynard, MN, and Alice and husband Dennis Shumway of Heron Lake; brother-in-law- Leonard Wersal of Owatonna; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother- Charles; sister- Dorothy Wersal; and sister-in-law- Margaret Tomschin.
