Arthur Thompson passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Society in St. James. Arthur Clifford Thompson was born February 7, 1926 in Rosendale Township, St. James, the son of Kenneth and Clara (Marth) Thompson. Art grew up on the family farm and attended country school. He helped work on the family farm as well as carpentry work as a youth. He was proud of his military service having served in the US Navy aboard the USS Rawlins (APA 226) as a Seaman First Class during WWII. On May 22, 1948, Art was united in marriage to Helen M. Nelson in Red Wing, MN. They made their home in Grogan, blessed with five children. Art was a hardworking self-employed carpenter. In his retirement, he was employed several years at the St. James Wayside Rest. He was a life-long, active member of the Pentecostal Church in St. James. At one time, served as a constable for Rosendale Township. He enjoyed gardening, painting, woodworking, and building things, having built many homes including his first house at the age of 16. He was a kind, wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Art had a great sense of humor and enjoyed sharing his stories with others. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughters; Luann (Mike) Lawrence of Madelia, Kathy (Blair) Haler of St. James, Jodi (Jerry) Mundt of Madison Lake, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, brothers; Harlan Thompson of St. James, Murvin (Betty) Thompson of St. James, Paul (Esther) Thompson of New Ulm, Clarence (Boni) Thompson of Lake Crystal, sister, Esther Francis of Missouri, in-laws; Violet Niemeier of Madelia, Melvin Engelbrecht of St. James, Wallace Nelson of Madelia and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, sons; Dennis and Steven, parents, daughter-in-law Carol, step-mother Nilva Thompson, sisters; Grace, Joyce, Joanne, in-laws; Orville Francis, Howard Niemeier, Mary Nelson, Phyllis Thompson, Dona Engelbrecht and Butch Carstensen.
