Arnold Veglahn

September 22, 1922 — January 6, 2015

Arnold Frederick "Judge" Veglahn was born September 22, 1922 at LaCrosse, WI, the son of Bernard and Isabelle (Geary) Veglahn. He graduated from Central High School in LaCrosse and Luther College in Decorah, IA. He received his Master's Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Also, attended the University of Colorado. Judge served in the Army Air Force (radio communications) Dec. 1942 - April 1946. On August 21, 1949, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Evanson. He taught and coached in Harmony, MN, 1949-1951, moved to St. James where he taught social studies, physical education and drivers education from 1951 until his retirement in 1984. In St. James he coached boys basketball for 29 years. His teams won 10 conference, 10 district, and 3 region championships (1954, 1972, and 1974) the 1972 state tournament team had a 29-0 record, winning the Class A tournament and defeating the Class AA winner. His lifetime record was 399-236. He coached baseball for 10 years, taking teams to the state tournament in 1960 and 1962. His teams won 4 conference and 4 district 6 titles. He also coached the girls' golf team. He was the 1972 Coach of the Year in basketball and was awarded the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame Award. He belonged to the 25 year Coaches Club, the State Coaches Association, MEA and NEA. He was inducted into the Luther College Hall of Fame in 1974. While in college he set numerous records in basketball and baseball. He belonged to First Lutheran Church and St. James Golf Club. He was a former member of the Lion Club. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening and playing cards. He enjoyed all spectator sports, travelling and spending winters in Mesa, AZ. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Veglahn of St. James, sons Mark (Tracy) Veglahn of Marshall, James (Tammy) Veglahn of Cedar Rapids, IA, sister Betty Voves of LaCrosse, WI, grandchildren Erin (Cory) Moon of Sioux Falls, SD, Kelly Veglahn of Omaha, NE, Cassandra Veglahn of Cedar Rapids, IA, great-grandchildren Noah, Talan, Rylan, Lavyn, and a sister-in-law Beth Kabat of LaCrosse, WI.
