Annette Dick

Annette Carolyn (Ewert) Dick was born one hour before midnight on December 24, 1923 to parents Henry S. and Karolina "Carrie" (Nickel) Ewert. By the time she was about three and a half, she had gained a sister, Wilma and a brother, Alden and had lost her mother to cancer, while living in Mountain Lake, MN, where her father taught at the Mountain Lake Bible School. Her father remarried about three years later, to Emma Boese, a nurse who had helped care for Carrie in the hospital. Within a few years two new siblings entered the family, a sister, Elinor and a brother, Calvin. Annette had wanted to be a teacher since she was in second grade, and the opportunity to do that came early. When she graduated from the Mountain Lake High School in 1941 there was a shortage of teachers, and a program at Mankato State Teachers College was created where a teaching certificate could be earned in one year. Out of 300 applicants, she was one of twenty students selected, and one year later she was certified and teaching in a rural school south of Butterfield, MN. During this time a young farmer named Emil Dick had been praying about finding a wife, and when he saw her in a choir they were both singing in, he felt God say to him, "There she is." He later asked her to play for a men's quartet and a male chorus he was directing, and some time later, when he heard she was moving to California with her parents to teach in the San Joaquin schools there, he asked her to pray about becoming his wife. After Annette had spent two years teaching in California and a year studying at Tabor College in Hillsboro, KS, they were married on June 18, 1948 in Reedley, CA. God blessed their marriage with two children: a boy, Ronald, and a girl, Marlene. After several years of raising children, Emil and Annette decided it would be good for her to keep up her teaching certification in the event that something happened to him, and she started taking classes to do that. This resulted in an offer to teach in the Mountain Lake Public Schools, and after prayer and counsel she accepted, teaching first or second grade for 21 years. During her early years of teaching, she also completed her Bachelor's Degree, graduating cum laude. After retiring from teaching in Mountain Lake, she and Emil spent two years in Medellin, Colombia, where she taught at a school under the sponsorship of the Mennonite Brethren. When they returned, they spent most of their winters until Emil's death volunteering at Rio Grande Bible Institute, and traveling to help Christian organizations as volunteers with MMAP, the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program. Annette was a creative person with many interests, including camping with her family, singing, creating cards and craft projects, keeping in touch with a wide circle of friends, and volunteering at her church and in the community. She responded to an invitation to accept Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at revival meetings in 1942, and sought opportunities to serve Him and bring others into the family of God through prayer, giving, study, and sharing with others throughout her life. Annette Dick, age 98, of Mountain Lake, died on Monday, February 21, 2022, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Society in St. James. She leaves behind a family who loved her dearly: two children, Ronald and his wife Sherry Dick of Omaha, NE, and Marlene and her husband Leroy Harder of Butterfield, MN; grandchildren, Andrew and Heather Gosen of Lakeville, MN, Julia and her husband David McCandless of Minnesota Lake, MN, Joni and her husband Stanley Fast, Justin and his wife Lauren Dick, and Jessica and her husband Andrew Wehrli, all of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren, Nyla and Jordan Gosen, Olivia, Emily, and Charlotte McCandless, Elena, Keyan, Isaac, Maera, Ciana, and Bryna Fast, Miriam, Calvin, and Percy Dick, and Gabriella, Eliza, Finnick, and Estella Wehrli; a sister, Elinor Kliewer of Newton, KS, and a brother Calvin Ewert of Lodi, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry S. and Carrie Nickel Ewert; her beloved stepmother, Emma Boese Ewert; her husband, Emil W. Dick; her brother, Alden Ewert and her sister, Wilma Leichty. We grieve for now, but rejoice that she now lives for eternity in the presence of her beloved Savior, Jesus Christ.
