Alphonse Anthony Mathiowetz was born on the family farm in Mulligan Township, Brown County to Florentine and Helen (Hornick) Mathiowetz on July 1, 1933. He attended country school #42 and completed his GED while serving in the Army. Alphonse helped his dad on the farm until he entered the Army in November of 1953. He served most of his time in Japan and then was honorably discharged in 1955. On September 28, 1953, Alphonse was united in marriage to LaDonna Schroepfer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. September of 1955, when Alphonse was discharged from the Army, the couple moved to a farm in Mulligan Township where they raised their 4 children - Joan, John, Joel, and Julie. Alphonse retired from farming in 1992. He served on the Brown County ASC Board for 9 years, Essig Co-op Board, Brown County Farmer's Union, DFL county board, county commissioners from 1994-1998, Catholic Aid, was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church where he was a lecture since 1963 and served on the Parish Council and PTA of St. Paul's School board. Alphonse was very proud to serve his country and was a member of the Albin Johnson American Legion Post #244. Alphonse died on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at the Sleepy Eye Medical Center. He is survived by children - John (Cheryl) Mathiowetz of New Ulm, Joel (Terri) Mathiowetz of Comfrey, Julie (Corey) Schmid of Sauk Rapids; 6 grandchildren - Christopher (Chelsey) Mathiowetz, Emily (Kaylee) Mathiowetz, Rachel (Nick) Wagner, Anthony (Becca) Mathiowetz, Annataya (Johnny) Zwack, and Kirby (special friend Megan) Schmid; great grandchildren - Jasper and Avery Wagner, Iris Mathiowetz, Milo Zwack, and Kian Pitt; siblings - Rosella Helget of Springfield, Donald (Marilyn) Mathiowetz of Springfield, Carol (special friend Smokey) Wendland of Sleepy Eye. Alphonse was preceded in death by his parents, wife LaDonna, daughter Joan Mathiowetz, sisters - Mary Ann (Lloyd) Sturm and Angeline (Gerald) Roiger, brother Gilbert Mathiowetz, and brother-in-law Kenneth Helget.
