Alice Riessen

Alice Louise Riessen, age 86, of Sleepy Eye, MN died on Oct. 6, 2010 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center. Private services for immediate family only where held at the home of her daughter and son in law. Pastor Keith Ainsley from Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, MN officiating. Interment Walcott Cemetery in Wallcott, IA at a later date. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, MN. Alice Louise Riessen went to be with her eternal father on Oct. 6, 2010. She had ovarian cancer, and fought a courageous battle, living longer than her doctors thought possible. Alice was born Alice Louise Niebuhr on Jan. 28, 1924 at the home of her parents, Frank and Hazel Niebuhr in Rock Island, IL. She grew up in Walcott, Iowa where her father ran the local meat market and processing plant. She graduated from Davenport Central High School and AIC, and was employed by Hickey Brothers in Davenport, and the Scott County Probation Department of Child Protection Services. She married Warren H. Riessen on Oct. 3, 1948, and was then a housewife and mother. Alice enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and her dogs. She moved to New Ulm to reside with her daughter Kay Lynn Haas PA and son in law Judge Michael J. Haas as Warren was no longer able to care for her alone. They lived with Kay for 8 months until her cares were such that she needed to be in a care facility. Then, she and Warren moved to the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye, MN where she resided until the time of her death. Alice is survived by her husband, Warren, Sleepy Eye, MN, daughter and son in law, Judge Michael and Kay Lynn Haas of New Ulm, MN, grandchildren Matthew (Amy) Haas, Walker, MN, Kathryn (David) Armstrong, Minneapolis, MN, and David (Shonna) Paulsen, Walcott, IA. Great grandchildren, Isaiah Haas, Ashly and David Armstrong, and Natalie and Jayden Paulsen. Sister and brother in laws, Wyatt and Jane(Riessen) Thede, Dixon, IA, and Nelda Kroeger, Davenport, IA., several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Hazel Niebuhr, Brothers, and sister in law, Raymond Niebuhr, Cannon Beach, Oregon, Robert and Betty Niebuhr, Lost Nation, IA, and Stanley Niebuhr, Walcott, IA.
