Virginia Angeline Berg was born on January 13, 1941 in Redwood County to George and Elizabeth (Sturm) Hammerschmidt. She was raised in Springfield and attended St. Raphael's Catholic School and Springfield High School. She married Gary Berg of Comfrey in 1959 and the couple had seven daughters. Virginia worked at the Comfrey Hospital for 17 1/2 years, was a cake decorator and a seamstress. She co-owned Comfrey Floral and Gift shop for 2 1/2 years. She also did secretarial work for St. Paul's Parish and worked for the Comfrey School Public Library.
