Robert Johnston was born November 21, 1926, in Springfield, MN the son of Earl and Gertrude (Appel) Johnston. Bob contracted polio as a young boy and spent many years at the Shriners Hospital. He graduated from Springfield High School and then attended the University of Minnesota. Bob was united in marriage to Dolores Augustin on July 1, 1951, in Sleepy Eye. Bob was owner/operator of the Springfield Chick Hatchery and later worked for Miesen Color Center, the Miesen family, and Rick's Firestone. He was an accomplished bowler and golfer and was a member of the Springfield Area Baseball Association. Bob was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, served on the Church Board, and was the janitor at church for many years. Robert Johnston died Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Oaklawn Health Care Center in Mankato at the age of 84 years. He is survived by children- Renae (Steve) Kiner of Rochester, Michael (JoAnn) Johnston of Cushing, WI, Doreen (Harley) Johnson of Sanborn, Tim (Lauri) Johnston of St. Charles, Tom (Jill) Johnston of Hamel, Steve Johnston of Nelson, WI, Sandra (David) Gahl of Janesville, and Rob (Amy) Johnston of N. Mankato; 14 grandchildren; brother John (Vi) Johnston of Olivia; and sister JoAnn (Myrle) Allen of Lake Crystal. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Dolores in 2010.
