Mie "Mieko" Bottem was born in Niigata, Japan on June 1, 1922, the daughter of Tetsutaro and Nada Nishikawa. Mieko grew up in Niigata where she attended primary school. She was interested and pursued art following her primary education. The area where they lived received heavy snow in the winter and she told the story of skiing from her upstairs window to school in the winter. Mieko worked for military families doing cooking and cleaning. She met Kenneth at a dance they both attended at the military base Kenneth was stationed. Following Ken's return to the US and completion of his military service he returned to Japan and he and Mieko were married in Tokyo, Japan on June 3, 1952. The couple returned to Minnesota where they farmed for 7 years. They moved into St. James and Ken went to work for the police department and later open his locksmith shop. Mieko enjoyed her flower garden, collecting knick-knacks, she enjoyed ladies aide and bazars at Albion Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband Kenneth Bottem of St. James, 2 brothers-in-law Arnold (Delores) Bottem of Litchfield and Leland Pearson of Litchfield, 6 nieces, 5 nephews and many great-nieces nephews and great-great nieces nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, George Thea Bottem, sister-in-law Ruth Pearson, brother-in-law sister-in-law Telford Luetta Bottem and an infant brother-in-law James.
