Lawrence Turbes was born on Aug. 8, 1923 in Brookville Township, rural Springfield, MN and passed away at the New Ulm Medical Center on October 20, 2014. He was one of thirteen children born to Joseph and Mary (Wenisch) Turbes. Lawrence was united in marriage to Darlene Kosel on June 28, 1949 and they were blessed with three children. He served in U.S. Army during World War II in Japan. Lawrence's trip across the Pacific Ocean certainly was a memorable one for him --- he never went on another boat! Prior to moving to the Joseph Turbes home site in 1953, Lawrence Darlene lived in Wanda, MN for 3 years. Lawrence and Darlene moved back in 1953 to help his father manage the family farm. Later, Lawrence purchased the farm from Joseph and continued to farm until his retirement in 1987. In 2008 Lawrence and Darlene sold the farm after being in the Turbes family for over a century and moved to Springfield. Lawrence served on the Brookville Town Board for 36 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. After retirement, Lawrence found time for those things farming didn't allow such as morning coffee outings with the guys. For many years following his retirement, Lawrence helped family with remodel and woodworking projects and neighbors with planting and harvesting tasks. To everyone, Lawrence is best remembered as the person with Oshkosh bid overalls and a smile. Lawrence is survived by his wife Darlene Turbes of Springfield, children Sharon (Rodney) Scholl of Big Lake, Rich (Cheri) Turbes of Springfield and Nancy (Chris) Patton of Plymouth; five grandchildren Kristine (Mike) Roberts of Red Wing, Greg (Nikki) Scholl of Visalia, CA, Sara Scholl, Brooklyn Center, Elizabeth and Michael Patton, Plymouth and nine great-grandchildren: Justin, Bradley and Courtney Roberts, Red Wing, Dean, Ethan, Luca, Beau and Wesley Scholl, Visalia, CA and Shyanna Anderson, Brooklyn Center; brothers Arnold (Dorothy) Turbes of Springfield and Leroy (Charlotte) Turbes of Kandiyohi.
