Lavinia Sorensen, age 89, of St. James, died on December 29, 2011, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James. Memorial services will be 1:30pm, Friday, January 6, 2012, at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James with Rev. Ken Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home on Friday. Lavinia Blanche Sorensen was born at Grogan, MN, on May 15, 1922, the daughter of Oscar A. and Lula (Benson) Sorenson. She moved to St. James in 1927, with her family, where she attended public school and graduating in 1940. She worked for Runge Swanson and the telephone company. In 1951, she moved to Lincoln, NE, where she worked for the University of Nebraska. In 1953, she moved to Riverside, CA, and worked for the University there for 3 years before moving to San Francisco where she lived until 1968. She worked for J.C. Penny Co. zone office in Phoenix until her retirement in 1977. She moved back to St. James in 1983. Lavinia was a member of First Lutheran Church. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and crafts. She is survived by her sisters, Opal Derksen of St. James, Alice Johnson of Deming, WA, brothers, Oscar (Pat) Sorensen of Denver, CO, Larry Sorensen of Fenton, IA, brothers-in-law, Gilbert (Doreen) Scribner of Spencer, IA, Al (Margaret) Kennel of Novato, CA, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers LeRoy (Beverly) Sorensen, Arthur (Anita) Sorensen, sisters Edith Scribner, M. Jeanni Kennel, niece Kathleen Hamilton, and nephew Danny Derksen.
