Kevin Nommensen, age 63, of St. James passed away at Mayo Clinic Health System in St. James on Thursday, October 28, 2021. Funeral services will be 11:00am, Saturday, November 20, 2021, at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in St. James with Rev. Jim Renz officiating. THE FAMILY IS REQUESTING EVERYONE WEAR A MASK AT THE FUNERAL AND VISITATION> Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be Friday at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James from 5-7pm and at the church one hour before services on Saturday. Kevin John Nommensen was born on July 22, 1958 in Redwood Falls, MN to Walter J. and Mavis (Hasse) Nommensen. He was baptized on August 10, 1958 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Vesta, MN by his grandfather Rev. Walter O. Nommensen. He grew up in the Vesta area until moving to St. James in 1966. Kevin confirmed his faith on April 7, 1974 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in St. James. He graduated from St. James High School in 1977. Kevin was united in marriage to Brenda Matz on June 4, 1983 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waseca, MN. After the wedding, they made their home in St. James. Kevin worked for Ordy Bayerkohler doing construction work for a short period of time before beginning a career at Don's Tire Service, where he was still employed. In Kevin's younger years he enjoyed camping and fishing at Game Lake County Park in New London, MN. He was skilled at wood working and shared his beautiful pieces with many people. He enjoyed road trips to southeastern Minnesota and along the Mississippi River, often times visiting with his Amish friends. He had a love for many dogs throughout his lifetime, as well as the outdoor cats. He spent many nights in the bleachers watching sporting events and concerts of his daughters and grandson. He is survived by his wife Brenda Nommensen of St. James, daughters and significant others Katie Elzenga (Tim Balfe) of Blue Earth, and Carissa Nommensen (Blake Reinke) of St. James, grandson Tate Elzenga of Blue Earth. Brothers Lorin (Patti) Nommensen, and Brian Nommensen, all of St. James. Sisters-in-law Mavis (David) Buker of Little Falls, MN and Diane Blowers of Waseca, MN. Aunts and Uncles Margie Danckwart of Lake City, MN, Janice Johnson of Brooks, MN, Ted and Genny Nommensen of West Bend, WI, and Arnie and Carol Nommensen of Green Bay, WI. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will also be missed by his dog, Trixie and cats, Rascal and Patches. He is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Mavis Nommensen, father and mother-in-law James and Joan Matz, grandparents Paul and Meta Hasse, and Rev. Walter and Cordelia Nommensen.
