John S. Hageman, age 93 of St. James, passed away peacefully at his home on November 2, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie; and is survived by sons William of Eden Prairie and David (Liz) of Mankato, and grandchildren Brandt, John, and Elise. John grew up in Sanborn, MN. He graduated from the University of Minnesota and then joined the armed forces, eventually commanding a small ship, LCI 338, in the South Pacific. His ship participated in several landings and operations and earned the Navy unit commendation for outstanding heroism in action. After the war he returned to the University and earned a degree in pharmacy. He met and married the love of his life, Elsie Anderson. They bought a drugstore in Morgan and raised their family, later moving to St. James, where they opened Hageman Drug. John was influenced by the great depression, by World War II, and by the friends and family in the Minnesota towns where he lived. He was a generous, loving, old-school gentleman. He cared about gardening, travel, opera, fishing, business, and lifelong learning, but most of all his family. Memorial services will be 11:00am, Friday, November 9, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in St. James with Rev. Dwight Hendricks officiating. Visitation will be Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James from 4pm to 7pm and on Friday one hour before services at the church.
