Irma Margaret Wendland, age 95, of Madelia, MN died on August 8, 2020, at Living Meadows at Luther in Madelia. A funeral service and visitation, abiding by COVID 19 guidelines, will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church-Madelia, on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 2:00 pm with visitation one hour prior to the service. The clergy will be Rev. Krista Strum. Interment will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Madelia. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home, Pilgrim Chapel in Madelia. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com. Irma Margaret (Nelson) Wendland was born to Carl and Palma (Stordahl) Nelson on August 1, 1925. She attended first grade in Lincoln Township and started second grade in Rice Lake Township, completing second grade in Madelia. She moved to Madelia in March of 1934 and was a graduate of Madelia High School in 1944. Irma married Orville D. Wendland on November 28, 1950 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home in Madelia until Orville's death on February 21, 1969. Irma was employed for several years for J.J. Bill and Son; Framers Home Mutual Ins. Co. and worked for 23 years after Orville's death at Citizens Insurance Agency which later became Madelia Insurance Center, Inc. She retired in December of 1992. Irma was confirmed in and was a longtime active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Madelia. During her time at Trinity, Irma served the church in many capacities. As a child, she was a member of the church choir and served as secretary of the Lutheran Daughters Reformation (LDR). As an adult, she was secretary and treasurer of Sunday School; secretary of Family Night, Church Council; president of WELCA for 8 terms, secretary of WELCA for 1 term; Co-Chairman of the Rachel Circle for several years; member of the Altar Guild; secretary of Stewardship (WELCA) for 2 terms and co-chairing the Mission Quilting at Trinity. Irma also volunteered at the Luther Memorial Home and as a Girl Scout Leader. In her free time, she enjoyed refinishing furniture, theater, concerts, square dancing and spending time with her family. Irma is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Leslie) Pietsch; sisters, Helen (Clete) Schwanke, Norma (Earl) Rydholm; sister-in-law, LaVonne Witt; brother-in-law, Stan Spence; grandchildren, Leslie Pietsch Jr, Melissa Pietsch, Rachelle (Chris) Friesen, Ron Pietsch, Miranda (Brent) Jacques; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Wendland; brothers, Warren Nelson, Maynard Nelson and sister, Grace Spence.
