Gilbert Hasse

April 29, 1921 — August 5, 2005

Gilbert W. Hasse was born on April 29, 1921 in New Ulm, MN the oldest of Martin Hasse and wife Elsie(Schimtz) nine children, brothers Orville, Melvin, Dick, Donald, sisters Inez Gehrke, Dorothy Parker, Alice Haessig, and Margie Tradup. Gilbert grew up working on family farms over his younger years around the communities of New Ulm, Plainview, and Elgin. Gilbert attended various schools to the 6th grade and the was expected to work on the farm after that. At age 19 Gilbert enlisted in the Army During WWII. He saw action in the Battle of the Argon Forest (France and Germany) where he was awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery under fire. After an honorary Discharge from the army Gilbert married Adeline(Missell) on April 26, 1946 in Plainview. Shortly afterwards they moved to Sleepy Eye. They had two children, Steve in 1947 and Randy in 1952. Gilbert was member of St. John's Ev. Luthern church. Gilbert worked at Del Monte in Sleepy Eye then retired after working there for 36 years. His wife Adeline passed away in1994 after moving in Country Side Senior Housing. Then in April 2004 Gilbert moved to Ross Park Assisted Living. Over the years Gilbert enjoyed fishing, watching and listening to his favorite Minnesota sports teams, the Twins, Vikings, and the Timberwolves. Gilbert was an active member of the VFW and Disabled American Vets and served for many years on the Honor Guard. He survived by his sons Steven and his wife Diane (Carlson), Randy and his wife Kathy (Portner). He also survived by brothers Melvin and Dick, sisters Inez, Dorothy and Margie. He also survived by grandchildren Erik, Erin (Boeve), and Gina (Dehmer). great-grandchildren Kristofor, Nathaniel and Adeline Ade and many nices and nephews. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, wife Adeline, his brothers Donald in infancy, Orville missing in action during WWII, and sister Alice Haessig.
