George Walter

George Aloysius Walter was born on June 11, 1920 in Clements, MN the son of Frank Anna (Guldan) Walter. He grew up near Clements and attended Marian School District #105 in Redwood County. After his schooling he worked on the family farm. George married Anna Braunger on November 20, 1941 in Morgan, MN. He was drafted into the US Army on May 13, 1942. He served in the infantry until his discharge in September of 1945. He received a Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Asiatic Pacific Service Award, 3 Bronze Stars, a Company Infantry Badge, 4 Discharge Emblems and 2 WWII Service Awards. After his military service ended George and Anna farmed near Clements for forty years. George was one of the first farmers in the area to plant soybeans. After retiring they moved to Sleepy Eye where they made their home. George was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Aid Association, Clements American Legion, DAV, and a former member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Clements. He enjoyed farming, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He especially enjoyed making Santa Bags and giving the out at Christmas. He and Ann celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past November. Survivors include his wife, Anna of Sleepy Eye, children, George Jr. (Mary) of Redwood Falls, Tom (Judy) of Clements, Steve (Alice) of Sleepy Eye, David (Muriel) of Springfield, Bill (Anita) of Sleepy Eye and Judy (Steve) Bloedow of Sleepy Eye, 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, 1 sister, 2 granddaughters, Carisa Kasi and 1 granddaughter-in-law, Terese.
