Gary Lee Viland

Gary Lee Viland, age 60, of Saint James, MN, died on September 17, 2021, at his home. A graveside service will be held at the LaSalle Lutheran Cemetery on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 2:00 pm. Military honors will be provided by the St. James Veterans Honor Guard. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James, Minnesota. Gary Lee Viland, 60, passed away unexpectedly at his home in St. James. He was born August 2, 1961, in Fairmont, Minnesota, to Gordon and Bonnie (Olson) Viland. Gary was the youngest of 5, growing up on a dairy farm in rural St. James. He attended LaSalle Elementary School and graduated from St. James High School in 1979. After graduation, Gary joined the US Army and attended Granite Falls Technical School. He married Arleen (Hermann) and later divorced. They had 2 children, Laura and Dean. Gary lived in St. James and was an auto mechanic. He also worked many years for Eiden Farm Drainage. Gary is survived by his daughter, Laura, and grandson, Jaydon (Putney) of Fairmont; son, Dean (Alice) of Lake Crystal; mother, Bonnie of Madelia; brothers, Mike (Karla) of Eden Prairie and Brad (Jill) of St. James; sisters, Melanie (Ken) Sands of Sequim, WA and Pam (Kevin) Kirsch of Rochester; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and his faithful canine companion, Shooter. He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon; grandparents, Oliver & Hazel Olson and Roy & Mable Viland.
