Elmer Otto Haala was born on October 28, 1916 in Stark Township to Henry Teresa (Suess) Haala. He attended rural school district 28 and St. Mary's in Sleepy Eye. Elmer married Mabel Rosalie Braun on May 8, 1939 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple lived and farmed near Leavenworth for many years. He was clerk for School Board #43, a member and president for 3 years of the Sleepy Eye Creamery Board, St. Mary's Finance Board for 3 years and a member and president of the Sleepy Eye Elevator Board. He was also a member of Catholic Aid Association, Knights of Columbus and Fraternal Order of Eagles. Elmer loved when his family was all together and they could spend time with each other. He is survived by his wife, Mabel of Sleepy Eye, daughters, Marlene Schwartz of St. Peter, Judith Peters of Norcross, GA, Barbara (Jon) Jahnke of Sleepy Eye, daughter-in-law, Denise Haala of Prospect Heights, IL, 8 grandchildren, Robb (Toni) Schwartz, Jennifer (Brent) Goraczkowski, Bill (Holly) Peters, Amy Medrano, Sarah Peters, Kristin (Paul) Sprenger, Nick Jahnke, Andrew Haala, 9 great-grandchildren, Megan, Jacob, Lucas, Colton, Anna, Sam, Sarah, Mason, Kayla, siblings, Wilbert (Angie) Haala of New Ulm, Orlene Kral of New Ulm, Delores (Sylvester) Spaeth, Vernard (Donna) Haala, Gladys (Lester) Reinharts, all of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Elmer Jr. and Patrick, son-in-law, Gary Schwartz, brother, Walter, sister-in-law, Mildred and brother-in-law, Harold Kral.
