Doris May (McCracken) Helleloid was born on July 24, 1921, in Hibbing, MN. During elementary school she lived in North Carolina when her father was a professor at Guilford College. They later moved to Minneapolis where she graduated from Washburn High School and earned a bachelor's degree in Home Economics from the University of Minnesota. She took a teaching position at Springfield High School in 1944, and met her husband, Trygve Helleloid, who worked for the Springfield Milling Company. They were married July 16, 1946, at the University of Minnesota chapel, and made Springfield their home for the rest of their lives. Doris was active in the community, serving on the library board as well as several terms on the local hospital board. For many years she was involved in the Circa Studi women's study club, a knitting club and several bridge clubs. Doris was raised in the Friends (Quaker) tradition and was a member of the Springfield United Methodist Church, where she participated in circle and service activities. Though her primary occupation was that of homemaker, providing loving attention to her family, she occasionally worked part-time as a teacher and as a dietitian for area nursing homes. Hobbies she enjoyed were needlework projects, Scrabble and reading. Family members have warm memories of her delicious meals and baked goods. She was a talented seamstress and made clothes and household items for those she loved. Doris is survived by her three children - Richard Helleloid (and Ingrid Ulstad) of Eau Claire, WI, Laura (and Mike) Morris of Falls Church, VA, and Louise (and Barry) Anderson of Apple Valley, MN; eight grandchildren - Geir Helleloid (and Meredith Hughes), Sirianna Helleloid, Paul Morris (and Carly Dirlam), Mark Morris, Mary Morris, Grant Anderson, Nolan Anderson, and Reid Anderson; and special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Duane and Artalissa (Coffin) McCracken; and her husband, Trygve Helleloid, who died in 2011. Memorials have been designated to the Springfield United Methodist Church, Springfield Public Library, and St. John Lutheran Home.
