Doris Shuler Walsh was born on June 12, 1923 in Brooklyn, Iowa to Bertha and Elmer Shuler. They moved to Rockford, Iowa in 1926 and operated a creamery station there. Later they moved to Charles City, Iowa. She attended grade school at Lincoln School and graduated from Charles City High School in 1941. After graduation, she was employed at the new Floyd County Court House in Charles City. When WWII began, she moved to Waterloo, Iowa to work as an inspector in a defense factory. After the war ended, she returned to Charles City and worked as a cashier at Gagen's Drug Store. She met her husband Arthur "Bud" Walsh after he returned from the service. They were married January 26, 1947 at the Congregational Church in Mason City, Iowa. Five children were born from this union. Doris and Bud lived in Nashua for 8 years and then in Alton, Iowa for 2 years. They returned to Nashua in 1957 and lived there until 1968. They lived in Plainfield, Iowa and Cresco, Iowa for 4 years before moving to Eau Claire, Wisconsin when Bud was transferred by his employer. While in Eau Claire, she worked at a department store for 12 years until she resigned to care for her older sister. After she and Bud retired in 1987, they spent 6 months in Texas each year for 4 years. After Bud's death in 2005, she remained in Eau Claire until moving to St. James, Minnesota in 2012. Doris accepted the Lord in 1960 at a crusade in Nashua. The Lord was very important to her throughout her life. She was active in the Congregational Church in Nashua and also in Sunday school. She was also active in Music Mothers, PTA, VFW Auxiliary, Women's Club and the Legion Auxiliary in Plainfield. She served as Cancer Chairperson for 6 years and was active in canvassing for many other organizations. She worked at the Nashua School for 10 years and had many fond memories of her life in Nashua. Doris enjoyed reading, crafts, music, playing cards and had completed her biography in 1997. She continued to write until her death. Doris is survived by her 5 children: Arthur Jr. (Larkin) of Roswell, Georgia, Connie Mautz of Urbandale, Iowa, Gregory (Carla) of St. James, Minnesota, Jeffrey of Mason City, Iowa, David (Carleen) of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Doris devoted her life to her husband, family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. After having 11 great-grandchildren, she often remarked "If you think grandchildren are fun, just wait until the great-grandchildren arrive." Doris passed away on Saturday, May 07, 2016 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James, Minnesota at the age of 92 years. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Arthur "Bud" G. Walsh, her parents Elmer and Bertha Shuler, two sisters Gertrude and Dorothy (Tom Jones), two brothers Raymond (Henrietta) and Glen, and son-in-law Edward Mautz. Interment will be at Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in Charles City, Iowa.
