Dixon James Harkin

Dixon James Harkin, age 91,of Sleepy Eye, MN died peacefully Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Dixon was born in Henry, SD to Harry and Delma (Bonderman) Harkin on November 24, 1924. He joined the Army on January 31, 1944, serving in WWII in India and Alaska and was honorably discharged on October 23, 1948. He married Lorraine Welter on June 25, 1949 in Morgan, MN. Some of the places they've lived were Morgan, Rowena and Clements, MN and Houghton, SD. Dixon worked in a grain elevator the first couple years of marriage. Then moved to a farm north of Clements. He was a dairy farmer and crop farmer throughout his farming years. He was an active member in the American Legion Robert Seikora Post #519 Clements, MN serving as commander and other officer positions and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Clements, MN. Later in his retirement years they were well known for growing asparagus which they sold locally. He drove truck for Malecek Livestock, Inc. of Morgan, MN. They moved to Ross Park apartments in Sleepy Eye, MN in 2007 and in 2014 they moved to Divine Providence Community Home. Dixon is survived by his wife, Lorraine of 67 years (June 25, 2016). His children Janet (Clete) Zinniel of Sleepy Eye, MN; Donna Schiller (Johnny Starcher) of Amarillo, TX; Patrick (Dianne) Harkin of Sleepy Eye, MN; Judie (Cary) Goergen of Alexandria, MN; Diane Harkin of Amarillo, TX and Pearl (Ed) Schottenbauer of Sleepy Eye, MN. Lenice Jensen (sister) of Cresco IA; Russell Swigart (brother in-law) of Redwood Falls, MN. 15 grandchildren: Timothy (Kayley) Zinniel,Terry (Amy) Zinniel,Tricia (Danon) Anderson, Shari (John) Willburn, Stephanie (Todd) Anderson, Dawn (Jason) Stenstrom, Shanon (Aaron) Vetsch, Brian (Erin) Harkin,Nathan (Katie) Goergen, Nicolas Goergen, Bridget (Dan) King,Candus (Ralph) Berry, Quentin (Sarah) Pollard, Laura Schottenbauer and Daniel (Amy Kral) Schottenbauer. 28 great grandchildren and 1great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by parents Harry and Delma Harkin. John (Jack) Harkin (brother), Loree Swigart (sister), Gene Jensen (brother in-law) and Shirley (Hoffbeck) Harkin (sister in-law) and Todd Zinniel (grandson).
