Daniel Janzen

April 4, 1922 — March 30, 2005

Daniel Janzen, the son of Peter P. and Katherina (Friesen) Janzen was born on April 4, 1922, in Carson Township, Cottonwood County, MN. Dan was raised on a farm northwest of Mountain Lake. He received his education in a country school and worked as a farm hand before enlisting in the U.S. Navy on September 9, 1942. Dan served in the Navy for 37 months and survived the attack on his Merchant Marine ship the S.S. H. De Young, which went down in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged on November 14,1945. On April 11, 1947, Dan was united in marriage to Esther Viola Rickert at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Parsonage in Mountain Lake. He was confirmed and baptized on February 8, 1948, at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, and this is where he remained an active member, serving on the finance committee for the educational building and on the Christian Service Committee. Dan worked for the Bingham Lake Elevator and later at the Mountain Lake Elevator. In 1950, he started farming southof Mountain Lake, and they later moved their farm operation to the west edge of Mountain Lake. In addition to farming, Dan drove truck for Friesen Trucking and worked at Land O'Lakes, Engeman Implement and LL Implement. He retired but continued to help with the farming at his home west of Mountain Lake. Dan enjoyed farming and fishing, was an avid golfer, and also served on the Mountain Lake Golf Board. Dan is survived by his wife, Esther Janzen of Mountain Lake; a son, Curtis and his wife Sherri Janzen of Mountain Lake; three daughters, Sandra Janzen of Tampa, FL, Barbara Janzen of Centennial, CO, and Glenda Janzen of St. Paul, MN; three grandchildren, Brian Janzen and fiance' Shanoah Becker, Brady Janzen and Lacey Janzen all of Mountain Lake; two sisters, Agnes Strand of Chisago City, MN and Anne Henze of St. Peter, MN; two sisters-in-law, Tillie Janzen of Mountain Lake and Dorothy Janzen of Warroad, MN; numerous nephews, nieces, otherrelatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Peter, Henry, Cornelius, Abraham and John Janzen; and three sisters, Helen Wilson, Katherine Junker and Elizabeth Graber.
