Arnold was born September 7, 1918 in Mountain Lake to Oscar and Alma (Carlson) Holmen. Arnold grew up on the family farm near Comfrey. He attended Comfrey Public School and completed an 8th grade education.On March 18, 1949, he married E. Lucille Johnson of Albert City, Iowa. They were blessed with three children. They lived on the family farm near Comfrey until he semi-retired from farming in 1984 and moved to Mountain Lake. Lucille passed away from Lou Gehrig's disease in 1986. On August 1, 1987, Arnold married Gertrude "Trudy" A. Schroeder at the Center Point Church in Mountain Lake. Arnold never lost his interest in the family farm and continued to help as much as he was able. A loving and faithful man, Arnold desired to serve the Lord and his fellow man all throughout his life. He was active in church, ministry and community. Arnold was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Darfur, MN. There he served in various leadership roles for many years as a Sunday School teacher, the Sunday School superintendent, and a member of the church board. Arnold also served on the board of the Lutheran Evangelistic Movement in Minneapolis. In 1976, He joined The Gideon's International. Arnold spoke in many churches sharing the mission of Gideon's International to distribute Bibles around the world. After moving to Mountain Lake, he became an active member of Center Point Church and served on the church board. Arnold also served on the Cottonwood County ASCS Board and was treasurer of the Selma Township Board.Arnold regularly ate at senior dining and was active in the Senior Club. He volunteered to help with Christmas in the Park in Mountain Lake, did snow removal, offered rides for friends and neighbors, and shot a good game of pool with anyone who was up to the challenge. Between volunteering for numerous projects and helping others, his hobby at home was working with wood. Arnold made projects for the home, family members and friends. Arnold Oscar Holmen of Mountain Lake, Minnesota went home to be with the Lord Wednesday morning, February 13, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Society in Windom at the age of 100 years. Arnold is survived by his wife, Trudy; three children: Paul Holmen and his wife, Debbie, from Fergus Falls, MN; Martha Johnson and her husband, Gary, from Rapid City, SD; Norman Holmen and his wife, Corrine, who live on the family farm in Comfrey, MN; three step-daughters: Donna Pankratz and her husband, Don, from Bingham Lake, MN; Diane Allman and her husband, Lon, from Cumming, GA; Dayle Schafer and her husband, Tim, from Sherburn, MN; and a step-son Duane Schroeder and his wife, Marlene, from Mankato, MN; 18 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille; brother, Holger and his wife, Sylvia; brother, Edner and his wife, Fern; a baby sister, and a great granddaughter, Ericka.
