Anna Ruby Smit, the daughter of Jacob and Anna (Steinle) Derksen was born on October 11, 1922 in Butterfield, MN. Anna was baptized on June 1, 1941 at the First Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake. She graduated from 8th grade country school, district 53 N.W. of Butterfield. Anna was united in marriage to William Smit on January 15, 1950 in Mason City, IA at a Lutheran church. This marriage was blessed with six children. Anna worked for 23 years. She was a janitor at Balzer and worked at Butterfield foods. She was a long time member of the First Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake, and a member of the Donald Larson V.F.W. Auxiliary No. 960 Butterfield. She enjoyed baking, gardening, sewing, quilting, scrapbooking and history. She cherished her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Anna is survived by her children, Stanley of Madelia, Steve (Jean) of St. James, Marlene (Daniel) Woods of Fairfax, Merle of Butterfield, Shirley (Kevin) Bottin of Mt. Lake, Irma (Gary) Korthouse of Windom; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank Derksen, David Derksen and Peter (Pat) Derksen; and sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, sister Sara; brothers Jacob and William.
