Alice Faye Anstey was born February 2, 1919 at Cumberland, IA to parents Archie and Faye (McGrew) Anstey. She grew up in southwest Iowa graduating from Creston High School in 1936, attended Ottumwa Heights College where she was involved in the Double Trio singing group. She was united in marriage to Harry Louis Porter on June 2, 1938 at Cumberland. She first met Harry in high school. The couple made their home in Atlantic for 30 years before moving to St. James in 1962. Alice enjoyed her family, her grandchildren, playing piano, singing, writing poetry, reading, crossword puzzles, traveling, gardening, camping and rock collecting. Alice loved to bake and do embroidery. She was a devote catholic and a member of the St. James Catholic Church and belonged to the ladies auxiliary. She also taught religion classes and volunteered at the hospital. Alice Porter passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2006 at the Lake Crystal Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a son Paul, daughter Jeanne, 2 grandchildren and a great-grandchild, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Amy Porter (Gregg Johnson) of New Ulm, Marta (Rick) Arch of Mankato, Dr. Miriam Porter (Ralph Bailey) of Carver, Frances Porter (Steve Walter) of Altamont, NY, Margaret Gray of Raymond, NE, Elizabeth (Dick) Sheehan of Las Vegas, NV, Nancy Dunsworth of Las Vegas, NV, sons Dr. Stephen (Tammi) Porter of LaCrosse, WI, Jan (Gail) Porter of Austin, sisters, Betty Dunn of Denver, CO, Dr. Eleanor Anstey of Coralville, IA, Sister Miriam Anstey of Davenport, IA, 28 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
